More Info

The Rock

In Squamish the granite is compact and hard, with cracks and corners showing climbable lines.  Tiny crystals protrude from the stone providing almost limitless opportunities for face climbing on lower angle slabs.

The rock around Squamish has been smoothed by glaciers thousands of years ago, but in some locations you can find edges and flakes making steep terrain travel doable.

In the northern Sea to Sky region, closer to Whistler, the rock was not affected by glaciers and has been weathered and fractured to produce excellent gymnastic face climbing. The cracks and sweeping slabs of Squamish are replaced by intricate faces, steep, juggy walls and with the odd jaw dropping roof.

Top Locations

The Squamish Chief

This massive granite rock is a world class rock climbing destination, rising above the stunning views of the Howe Sound. The Chief is located approximately 7 kilometers north of Murrin park and two kilometers south of the entrance to downtown Squamish.

Murrin Park

Murrin Park is a popular climbing destinations in Squamish, that caters to a variety of climbers with different abilities. Whether you are looking for steep, bolted sports climbs, or splitter cracks with gear placement you will find what you are looking for on the cliffs surrounding Browning Lake

The Papoose

The Papoose- is located approximately 1km south of the chief viewpoint parking lot. The papoose is a large 150 meter high cliff with a stunning view overlooking the Howe Sound. The climbing routes are characterized by short multipitch routes which follow strong crack lines up the face.

Weather

Rock climbing is available year round in Squamish, located at sea level means we get limited snow in the winter and weather conditions are very moderate.  The best seasons to climb are as follows:

Spring- March April May June-  temperatures are warm for climbing, but Squamish experiences long rainy spells at this time.

Summer– July and August- the warmest and driest time of the year.

Fall – September October and November, can be the best conditions of the year, with less crowds, cooler days provide more friction on the granite.  The heavy rains usually hold off until late October.

Winter- this season is reserved for locals, as even the most dedicated opportunists will get frustrated by the persistent rain. Better to plan a ski trip and go rock climbing if the weather is good

Gear

Gear will be determined by the style of climbing in which you choose to participate, but here is a basic guide line for gear:

Rack

  • Sport climbers will get by with a rack of 16 quickdraws for almost every route.
  • Crack climbing adventure, you will need more gear. Pack a full set of nuts and a set of cams up to 4”. A hand full of TCUs (#0-#4) and RPs are useful.  Also a  selection of long runners is recommended.
  • Please check gear recommendation for each intended climb before you go

Climbing Shoes

  • Two pairs is best, one comfortable shoe for long multi pitch routes and a tighter shoe for hard single pitch routes
  • Thin cracks will need a pointed low profile toe
  • Wide cracks will feel better with a stiffer sole
  • Friction and face climbs will be easier with aggressive edging shoe

Rope

  • Bring a 60m rope and a second line for multi pitch routes.
  • Helmet- always recommended
  • Boulderers will want at least one crash pad
  • Brushes chalk and tape is beneficial in this area
